This sounds like an incredible opportunity. Is there a set criteria for "underrepresented"?

Expand full comment

yes, it definitely is! We want to be as inclusive as possible on this front and ultimately it's down to the applicant to explain (i) why their voice is underrepresented and (ii) what they need the grant and what they would use the grant for.

Definitely applying, thank you!

Is it a full synopsis that is required, revealing all the twists and turns of the story, or a "marketing" synopsis? Thanks!

This sounds amazing, so happy to see something like this! Just to confirm - can I send in 5000 words from a different section of my novel (not the start)?

Expand full comment

yes, that's fine.

Can it be for Children?

Expand full comment

Yes as long as it's a novel.

100% applying. My outward facing work is non fiction, but i've been beavering away on some fiction. One question, my non fiction work is represented by an agent who only represents non fiction. As it stands my fiction work is non agented will I still be eligible to apply?

Expand full comment

if your agent wouldn't and couldn't represent your fiction then i think so, but that's quite odd / rare. Usually if an agent has signed you they're represent your whole scope of literary activities so do check your contract x

Hi Abigail and Claire. I just wanted to add to this discussion. My agent only represents adult fiction. So for the children’s books I want to write I will need to find a different agent. Some agents do everything but it seems not all. Iqbal

this is a grant for someone working on their first novel and who is unrepresented, so i don't think you meet you the criteria sadly if you have representation for your fiction.

Hi Abigail - yes, I wasn't applying, but just supporting Claire. Good luck with the giving out of the grant!

Hello!

I was wondering when we’ll be able to know who the winner is.

Thank you :)

Hello, we have had hundred of submissions and we are a small team of three with full time jobs as agents so please bear with us. It will likely take a couple of months just to read through everyone's submissions :)

That is understandable. Thank you :)
